The Route Overview
This 14-day circuit covers four countries — the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, and Italy — without a single flight. The backbone of the journey is three premium rail services: the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris, the Nightjet overnight sleeper from Paris to Zurich, and the Bernina Express — one of the highest and most dramatic rail journeys in Europe — from Chur through the Engadin Alps to Tirano in northern Italy. The return leg runs via Milan and the Paris Nightjet back to London, completing the circuit.

Days 1–3
The Nightjet to Zurich
Day 1 begins at London St Pancras International with the mid-morning Eurostar to Paris Gare du Nord — 2 hours 16 minutes of effortless travel under the Channel. A station-side hotel near Gare de l'Est is worth booking for a few hours' rest and a relaxed dinner before the overnight departure. The Nightjet to Zurich departs Paris Gare de l'Est at approximately 22:20.
Aboard the Nightjet, private couchette and single-occupancy cabin options are available. The train crosses into Germany via Strasbourg in the early hours, climbing into the Swiss border region before dawn. You wake somewhere between Basel and Zurich — the Rhine valley narrowing, pine forests thickening, the first Alpine ridgelines appearing through the cabin window — and arrive at Zurich Hauptbahnhof at approximately 08:50, directly in the centre of the city.
Days 2 and 3 in Zurich: the old town, the lake, and a day trip on the Rigi — the "Queen of the Mountains" — by rack railway from Arth-Goldau. Book your Zurich hotel with early check-in at 08:00 to make use of the Nightjet arrival time.
Days 4–6
The Bernina Express & Italian Lakes
Day 4: board the Bernina Express from Chur (45 minutes by direct train from Zurich HB). The Bernina is a UNESCO World Heritage railway — 196 bridges, 55 tunnels, and an ascent to 2,253 metres above sea level over 4 hours. The panoramic carriages have wrap-around windows that eliminate the distinction between inside and outside. Arrive Tirano mid-afternoon. Cross the Italian border on foot into the market square and take the regional Trenord service to Lecco and onward to Lake Como.
Days 5 and 6: Varenna on Lake Como — accessible only by ferry or foot, with no through road. Two nights here, with a ferry day to Bellagio and a morning walk to Castello di Vezio above the village. Milan is 70 minutes away by direct Trenord train from Varenna–Esino when you're ready to move on.
Days 7–10
Milan & the Swiss Return
Days 7–8 in Milan: Pinacoteca di Brera, the Navigli canal district, and La Scala if the season permits. Day 9: high-speed Frecciarossa to Geneva (3h 20m) and onward to Interlaken by regional train — the Jungfrau region base for Days 9–10. The Jungfraujoch summit railway, the Schilthorn cable car, and the Lauterbrunnen valley waterfall circuit are all accessible without a car from Interlaken Ost station.
Days 11–14
Lucerne & the Return Nightjet
Day 11: Interlaken to Lucerne (2h by regional train via Brienz and the Brünig Pass). Two nights in Lucerne — the Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument, and a lake steamer to Flüelen and back. Day 13: direct IC train from Lucerne to Milan Centrale (3h 15m), afternoon free in the city. That evening, board the Milan–Paris Nightjet from Milano Centrale — departs approximately 21:00, arrives Paris Gare de Lyon 08:15. Connect by taxi or RER to Gare du Nord for the mid-morning Eurostar. Home by early afternoon on Day 14.
Book a Paris station-side hotel near Gare du Nord for the connection morning if you'd prefer a night's rest before the final Eurostar home.
The Logistics Reality Check
This itinerary exists. Every connection above is real and bookable. But executing it requires coordinating six separate train bookings across three different national rail APIs — SNCF, SBB (Swiss Federal Railways), and Trenitalia — each with their own ticket release windows, seat reservation rules, and booking systems. The Nightjet Paris–Zurich opens for booking 6 months in advance on the ÖBB website, in German. The Bernina Express requires a separate panoramic supplement booked through Rhaetian Railway, also in German. Nightjet sleeper cabins on the Milan–Paris leg are limited and sell out weeks before departure.
