    Essential gear, connectivity, and protection
    for the modern rail journey.

    01 · The Gear

Pack for the Cabin, Not the Carousel.

Sleeper cabin overhead racks are designed for a specific bag profile: narrow, rigid, and under 70cm in length. Hard-shell cases protect contents from compression when stacked in shared racks overnight. Soft-sided bags flex into the space but offer no protection if a heavy case is placed on top.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express imposes the strictest constraints on the network: one piece of hand luggage per passenger, maximum 70cm × 45cm × 25cm, stored in your cabin for the duration. Cabin trunks travel in the luggage van and must be pre-booked. Carl Friedrik's Carry-On Aluminium was designed to the VSOE overhead spec — it is the only piece of luggage we recommend without qualification for European sleeper travel.

    02 · Pre & Post Journey

Book the Right Hotel at the Right Station.

Sleeper trains deposit passengers between 06:30 and 09:00. Hotel check-in doesn't open until 14:00 or later. Booking a property within walking distance of the terminal — the night before or on arrival day — eliminates the gap entirely.

    • London · St Pancras

      Night Before

      St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Directly above the Eurostar terminal. Luggage storage from 07:00 — board the morning Eurostar without a transfer.

    • Paris · Gare de l'Est

      Night Before

      citizenM Paris Gare du Nord

90 seconds from Thalys and Eurostar platforms. 24-hour check-in — ideal for late arrivals before an early VSOE departure.

    • Venice · Santa Lucia

      Arrival Day

      Hotel Oltre il Giardino

4-minute walk from the station. VSOE passengers arrive at 07:00 — this property offers the earliest check-in at any hub.

    03 · Digital Connectivity

Zero Roaming Fees Across Every Border.

A London–Zurich–Milan sleeper itinerary crosses four mobile networks in one night. Physical SIM cards accumulate roaming charges at each border. An eSIM — installed by QR code before departure — switches carrier automatically and keeps you on a single flat-rate data plan for the entire journey.

    • No roaming fees

One flat rate across 39 European countries

    • Automatic switching

Carrier changes at every border — no manual steps

    • Instant setup

QR code activation before you board, from any device

    • Dual SIM

Your existing number stays active in parallel

    04 · Protection

Insurance Built for Rail, Not Flights.

Standard travel insurance treats a missed train connection as a minor inconvenience. On a multi-operator European sleeper itinerary — where a 20-minute Eurostar delay can void a confirmed Nightjet booking with no automatic rebooking right — it is a significant financial loss. The policies we recommend explicitly cover the following.

    Missed Rail Connections

Covers full rebooking costs when a delayed first leg voids a confirmed sleeper — the most common and most expensive claim on European multi-operator itineraries.

    Lost or Delayed Luggage

Pays out for replacement essentials within 12 hours of delayed baggage — critical when your courier and train arrive separately.

    Trip Interruption

Reimburses unused sleeper segments and emergency accommodation if illness or bereavement cuts your journey short.
