Cabin Space Constraints
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express runs on original 1920s Wagons-Lits rolling stock, and the cabins were designed for an era when passengers travelled with porters and trunks were loaded into a separate luggage van. The result is that the historic sleeping compartments — beautiful as they are — have effectively zero under-bed storage and no wardrobe space beyond a narrow hanging hook and a small overhead shelf. This is not a flaw. It is the authentic condition of the world's most iconic train, and understanding it before you pack is what separates a serene journey from an anxious one.
The overhead shelf above the window seat accommodates one piece of soft-sided hand luggage only. Your cabin steward will take everything else at check-in and store it in the luggage van, where it remains inaccessible for the duration of the journey. Plan your packing accordingly: everything you need for dinner, overnight, and breakfast must fit in the cabin with you.

Dinner aboard the VSOE is a formal occasion, and the dress code is observed without exception in the dining cars. For the evening meal, gentlemen are expected to wear a dinner jacket (tuxedo) with a black or white dress shirt and bow tie. A dark lounge suit is the absolute minimum and will be quietly noted. For ladies, floor-length gowns, formal cocktail dresses, or elegant separates are the standard — and the dining car provides the perfect backdrop for both.
Daytime dress is described by Belmond as "relaxed elegance" — which in practice means smart casual. Jeans are acceptable during the day if paired with a blazer or equivalent. Trainers and sportswear are not in keeping with the spirit of the journey and will feel out of place. The transition between daytime and evening attire typically happens in your cabin around 18:30, before your dinner sitting.
Evening (Dinner)
- Dinner jacket / tuxedo (gentlemen)
- Black or white dress shirt + bow tie
- Floor-length gown or formal cocktail dress (ladies)
- Dark lounge suit (minimum acceptable for gentlemen)
Daytime (Departure to 18:30)
- Smart casual — blazer or equivalent
- Tailored trousers or smart chinos
- Jeans acceptable if well-presented
- No sportswear, trainers, or casual shorts
The Hold Luggage Reality
Any luggage beyond what fits in your cabin is handled by your cabin steward at the point of boarding and transferred to the luggage van. This includes large hard-shell suitcases, oversized garment bags, and additional cases. Once stowed, this luggage cannot be accessed during the journey — not between London and Paris, not during the Alpine crossing, and not at the Italian border. It is returned to you upon arrival at Venice Santa Lucia.
This is not a luggage storage service with on-request retrieval. It is a definitive separation for the duration of the journey. If your medication, evening shoes, or passport are in a checked case, they are inaccessible until Venice. Plan your cabin bag with the full journey in mind — including anything you might need if the train is delayed overnight.
