Can you take a car on the sleeper train?

No — you cannot take a car on any UK sleeper train today. The old 'Motorail' car-carrying services, which let motorists load their vehicle onto the train and travel overnight with it, no longer exist. British Rail's Motorail network was wound down over the 1980s and 1990s, with the last London–Scotland Motorail running in 1995. A short-lived revival added car-carrying vans to the London Paddington–Penzance sleeper from 1999, but that too was withdrawn a few years later. Neither the Caledonian Sleeper (London–Scotland) nor the GWR Night Riviera (London–Cornwall) carries cars, vans, motorbikes or trailers in 2026, and there are no plans to bring the service back. What you can bring on board is yourself, luggage, and — with a free reservation — a bicycle. If you need a car at your destination, the practical approach is to travel by sleeper and hire a car on arrival: both Inverness and Penzance have car-hire options near the station. That is often cheaper and less tiring than a long overnight drive, and it lets you sleep while the train covers the distance.
